Cultural Activites Calendar - June 2009

EVENT OF THE MONTH : FÊTE DE LA MUSIQUE

The Fête de la Musique was launched in France in 1982 by the French Ministry of Culture, with the slogan « Faites de la musique » (Make music!). It takes place every year on the Summer solstice, June 21st, the shortest night of the year.

- A celebration of all forms of music, for all audiences

The Fête de la Musique isn’t a festival per se. Rather, it’s a public celebration of music, open to all participants, both amateurs and professionals, and offered each year to millions of curious and open-minded people. Its aim is to ensure that music-making be accessible to all, and to expose audiences of all ages and walks of life to a broad range of musical expression.

- Steady international growth since its beginnings in 1982

The Fête de la Musique now takes place in over 100 countries, on five continents. Initially, the network of French cultural institutions contributed to its increasingly global profile, but many local stakeholders (culture ministries, municipalities, music professionals, arts organizations, etc.) are making the event their own. By adapting to the specific cultural context of each country, the Fête de la Musique has successfully reinvented itself to become a truly global event.

As a collective celebration of all things musical, the Fête de la Musique has a bright future in a city as diverse and young as Toronto, since it speaks to all people, encouraging them to embrace the act of making music and to use it as a tool for open dialogue between cultures.

A walk through the parks, gardens and squares of Paris
Photos by Clarissa Inglis

There are over 400 parks and gardens in Paris, which are closely woven into the history of their neighbourhoods. Clarissa Inglis takes us through several of these treasured public spaces, highlighting their ecological, cultural, historic and aesthetic value.

Parisians and tourists mingle in these peaceful gardens, where each is free to inhabit the space to suit his or her needs : a mid-afternoon nap, a quiet read in the shade of a chestnut tree, a gathering with friends, a family picnic...

This exhibit is not a collection of postcard-type images of Paris. Rather, it casts a sociologist’s eye upon the manner in which Parisians occupy spaces that are both « natural » and deeply rooted in the urban fabric.

The exhibit is based on four broad themes: reading, lazing about, conversation and inhabited nature. Through Clarissa Inglis’ lens, we better understand how these parks, gardens and squares are condusive to solitude as well as social interaction.

The perfect setting for daily exchanges and friendly interaction, the parks of Paris have long been an integral part of the cultural practices of the capital’s inhabitants.

Conference on perfrume

Les Parfums du Parfum

based on Patrick Süskind’s famous novel, "Perfume, the story of a murderer"

Presented by
Mr. Christophe Laudamiel, creator of perfumes

Mr. Laudamiel works as a perfumer for International Flavors and Fragrances in New York.

With his strong scientific educational background – he graduated with honours at the École Européenne des Hautes Études des Industries Chimiques de Strasbourg in 1991 – Mr. Laudamiel began teaching chemistry at MIT are received his perfume creation diploma from Procter & Gamble in 1997. Rising through the ranks, he became senior perfumer at Proctor & Gamble, then at the IFF.

Christophe Laudamiel explores the relationship between the worlds of perfume, art and design. He also organizes simple activities to make school children aware of what they can explore through their sense of smell. Children are called upon to connect a series of photographs with corresponding scents. To optimize the mastery of spelling, they relate certain words to certain scents, a process which has proven effective to facilitate memorization.

Christophe Laudamiel’s many creations are known throughout the world, and include Happy Heart and Happy in Bloom (Clinique); HN for Men and HN for Women (Harvey Nichols); Le baiser de l’Artiste (Orlan), Absinth et Mimosa (Slatkin & Co.); Les Parfums du Parfum (Thierry Mugler for Patrick Süskind); Polo Blue For Men and Bougie Pink Pony (Ralph Lauren).

With Thierry Mugler, Mr. Laudamiel created a box including 15 scents featured in key scenes from Perfume, Tom Tykwer’s film based on Patrick Süskind’s best-selling novel. A first in the world of perfumes, this project reflects their shared desire to create an anthology of perfumes and to use various concepts, technologies, molecules and raw materials to give people a « sense » of the world of perfumes in the 21st century…

For the World Environment Day, we all have a date with the planet !

“Home”

a film by Yann Arthus-Bertrand

In 200.000 years on earth, humanity has upset the balance of the planet, established by nearly four billion years of evolution. The price to pay is high, but it’s too late to be a pessimist : humanity has barely ten years to reverse the trend, become aware of the full extent of its spoliation of the Earth’s riches and change its patterns of consumption.

By bringing us unique footage from over fifty countries, all seen from the air, by sharing with us his wonder and his concern, with this film Yann Arthus-Bertrand lays a foundation stone for the edifice that, together, we must rebuild.

EcoAmbassadeurs du Monde, maneged by Yves Francis Danteu, will take part in this evening.

Once upon a time, there was a young boy who grew up in a garage where everone loved to sing. This was in 1939, he was 8, and he loved puppets and operetta. Then, he wanted to make movies, but his father wanted him to become a mechanic… That childhood – and those memories – belong to Jacques Demy. The story of this particular childhood is a happy one in spite of the painful events of the war and the post-war years.

« When a filmmaker meets a filmmaker... what you get is a kaleidoscope of memories rooted in a shared vocation ».
