Alliance Française is pleased to invite you to a reading of Plantation Massa-Lanmaux by its author, Yann Garvoz finalist 2012 of the Trillium award (the finalist will be known on June 20th). A discussion regarding the book will follow.

In the 18th Century, the young son of a Carribean plantation owner returns home following his studies in France. His father's plantation is dependant upon the absolute submisison of the slaves to their master.

Filled with the ideas and ambiguities of the Lumières philosophers, Donatien, who has the same first name as the Marquis de Sade, will attempt to modernize his father's domaine. His actions will lay bare and push to their paroxystic conclusion the libidinous workings of a society based on slavery : indeed, according to Yann Garvoz, the "Sadian" dialectic of Desire and Imprisonment was materialized in a surprising fashion in the French colonies of America.

Yann Garvoz is a French writer (« Francophone of French origine », as he likes to describe himself) who has lived in Toronto for five years. Part of his family lives in Guadeloupe, where he also spent several years. His particular fields of interest are French colonial history and the resulting identity issues, psychoanalysis, dance and poetry.
