Flag-Raising Ceremony of the French Tricolour on Bastille Day
Once again this year, the City of Toronto will be honoring us by raising the Tricolour on the day of our National Holiday. This ceremony will take place on the podium roof of Toronto's City Hall building on July 14 at 12:00 noon. Refreshments will be served beforehand at 11:30 a.m. in the Members' Lounge.
It is important that a significant number of French people and friends of France take part in this ceremony, both as an acknowledgement of this act of courtesy on the part of Toronto City Hall and to mark the place of the French community and of France, one of the "founding nations", in Canada's largest city.
If you can spare the time, I would therefore greatly appreciate having you present at this ceremony and would be grateful if you would kindly pass this information along to any French and Francophone associations to which you may belong.
My sincere thanks to you in advance.
Sincerely,
Philippe Delacroix

a contemporary documentary from a wide scale of themes broadcasted on the Planète channel in France or Canada.
FAUST CONTRE MEPHISTO [Faust vs. Mephisto] (60 min)
Three outstanding scientists. Three German Nobel Prize laureates. Three portraits as fascinating as they are frightening.
Three scientists in Nazi Germany: a physicist, a chemist and a biochemist - Werner Heisenberg, Carl Bosch,
Adolf Butenandt. These men were contributors to the scientific revolution that has totally transformed our daily lives
and our world view. At the same time, they worked for a murderous regime. Three overlapping portraits,
an ever-current reflection on the relationship between science and power.

REGARDE, NOS CHEMINS SE SONT FERMÉS [Look, Our Paths Have Closed], by Françoise Xenakis
The Alliance Française and the French Consulate are proud to present French writer Françoise Xenakis
for her book Regarde, nos chemins se sont fermés (Albin Michel, 2002). This is an event of the Soundaxis
Festival in Toronto (1-11 June, 2006)
REGARDE, NOS CHEMINS SE SONT FERMÉS [Look, Our Paths Have Closed]
This narrative concludes earlier writings about the same man: Iannis, her husband, confidant, friend, the Greek in exile, the architect of genius, the composer whose works are performed all over the world, the man who inhabits her life forevermore. Iannis Xenakis died in January 2000, following 14 years of illness. Did he depart this life of his own free will? For years he struggled with mental absences, forgetfulness, words that slipped out, unfinished sentences, disorientation. The doctors were never able to pin a label on his illness. It hardly mattered… This disease of indifference created a shell around him which was protected by Françoise, who served as keeper of the hearth or she-wolf always on the ready to defend what was hers. With immense compassion inspired by his vigour and legendary humour (which were just so many defence mechanisms for coping with misfortune), she speaks of the pathetic world of those who don't belong - people who are sick, down-and-out or mentally ill in search of anything that can break their loneliness.

an event of UniversCiné
In conjunction with Universciné, the Alliance Française of Toronto invites all film buffs to the monthly gathering of

by the audiovisual department of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"La Répétition"
Natalie (Emmanuelle Beart) and Louise (Pascale Bussieres) were childhood friends who had a devastating falling out.
Ten years later, they meet by chance, and rekindle their friendship. The terms of their relationship have changed greatly,
however--Natalie is a successful, and Louise worships the ground she walks on. This sets the two on a destructive,
co-dependent course that leads to tragedy. Director Catherine Corsini examines the complex interactions of women and
the overlapping passion and rivalry that exist in female friendships.

Literary Evening
The Alliance Française is pleased to welcome the writer, Thomas Scott.
He will present his collection of poems entitled User's Guide to a Blank Wall, and he will proceed with a public reading in English of a selection of his choice.
Daniel Soha, who translated this work and is a former director of the Alliance Française,
will read an expressive French rendition of Mr Thomas Scott's work.
User's Guide to a Blank Wall is a collection of 64 poems.
They are organized in three sections with English occupying the first half of the book,
translations following.
The book is a thorough, intense slice of life filled with the rich colors of those coveted
"moments worth stealing" that the poet is privileged to find under the "scabby shells" of the mundane
and the inconspicuous, and exposes in all their secluded radiance: lovers, haters, dreamers, homebodies
and the homeless are looking glasses that enhance both the eye of the beholder and the object beheld,
beauty and its voyeur, the actor and his act.

Rendez-vous Planète :
"Un charter pour les étoiles" a documentary by Philippe Levasseur and Sébastien Daguerressar (60min) (no English subtitle)"
Every month, in collaboration with Planète Canada, the Alliance Française feature in its gallery
a contemporary documentary from a wide scale of themes broadcasted on the Planète channel in France or Canada.
"Un charter pour les étoiles"
The descendants of slaves, now forced to flee civil war, Hassan and Fatouma are members of
a people facing extinction - the Bantus of Somalia. The two have lived for the past 10 years
in refugee camps in Kenya. But Hassan and Fatouma - like 13,000 other Somali Bantus - will soon
begin a new life in the United States. (In the case of Hassan and Fatouma, they will be going to Salt Lake City.)
It is one of the biggest refugee relocation programs ever organized. And in a classroom made up to look like the
kind of apartment they can expect to find in the West, the refugees are being schooled in the "American way of life."
Among the items on the curriculum: corn flakes; peanut butter; air conditioning; "Call 911"; and, of course,
the "stars and stripes." They have but one week to put behind them their ancestral ways of living and replace all
that with the knowledge they need to receive their diploma in "living in the modern world." After that,
it is a 30-hour journey to their new home and a culture that they will find very different from the one they left behind.
Following the documentary, a reception will be offer by Planète Canada.

CONTACT FESTIVAL
Bruno Rosier' exhibition: "Parallel memories"
From May 3 to May 26 and
June 14 to July 14
The Alliance Française and the Consulate General of France in Toronto
are proud to present the Bruno Rosier's exhibition during the Contact Annual Photography Festival.
In 1992, Bruno Rosier found twenty-five prints from 1937 to 1953 in a flea market, showing the same person
posing alone in front of famous landmarks all over the world. This discovery was the starting point for
a photographic odyssey that was also intended as an exploration of self-representation and the artistic process.
Rosier decided to follow this man's footsteps (only his initials, R.T. are known), in order to re-create
the same shots half a century later he dressed and posed in accord with the original photographs.
The fifty prints in this exhibition are twin images of such tourist meccas as the Egyptian Pyramids,
Niagara Falls, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Acropolis of Athens. Through these self-portraits,
Rosier disturbs the viewer by exploring an individual's singular identity which ultimately ends
up disappearing amid the banality of everyday life and images.
The exhibition was first shown at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie,
Paris in November 2004, and currently at the Aperture Gallery, in New
York. His installation activities can be found at www.aproposdumonde.org

Rendez-vous Planète :
"Hôtel Palestine", a documentary by Antonia Rados (60min)
Every month, in collaboration with Planète Canada, the Alliance Française will feature in its gallery
a contemporary documentary from a wide scale of themes broadcasted on the Planète channel in France or Canada.
"Hôtel Palestine"
Antonia Rados has been a senior reporter at RTL (Radio Télévision Luxembourg) since 1995.
She covers the Middle East. And like other major international media correspondents, Rados was an eyewitness
to the invasion of Iraq from her base in Baghdad's Palestine Hotel. Despite the dangers (and the frequent need
to outwit her officially-appointed "guides" and "translators") , she would venture out each day to bring back
analysis and stories that provided a true picture of what she was going on in the war-wracked country.
Rados' account of her two months in Baghdad helps shed light on what the Western media described as
the unexpected and spectacularly quick collapse of the Iraqi regime.
Following the documentary, a reception will be offer by Planète Canada.
At La Galerie of the Alliance Française.
