Event Description
As part of the cycle: “Women Artists from the 18th to the 20th Century”
By Gilles Genty, art historian
The role and activity of women artists was remarkable throughout the 18th century, thanks in particular to princely and royal patronage. From the courts of Russia, Prussia, to France, from the entourage of Catherine II to that of Marie-Antoinette, from Neoclassicism to Preromanticism, in painting but also in sculpture, women artists occupied major positions in the history of art. Their technical mastery was often astounding; Rosalba Carriera conquered Europe with her pastels, and her fame equaled that of Chardin or Liotard, while the portraits of Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun were highly prized for their psychological intensity.
