Event Description

Members: Federico Tarazona, charango; Showan Tavakol, kamancheh.

Duo Perse-Inca is the result of an encounter in Montreal between two musicians with rich traditions from Iran and Peru, Showan Tavakol and Federico Tarazona. This collaboration has resulted in an approach to very ancient musical systems that both artists explore within a contemporary perspective. By merging languages, techniques, and esthetics, they have created music where two ancestral people interact and are embodied by their two representing instruments, the Iranian kamancheh and the charango of the Andes. On the one hand, the kamancheh brings out the sounds of Persian classical music and its characteristic repertoire, Radif, as well as the rhythms and aesthetic elements of Iran's regional music, such as Azeri and Kurdish music. On the other hand, the charango, a small Andean chordophone descending from the Baroque guitar used in South America by the colonizers of the 16th century, infuses harmonies and arpeggios that result from a rich musical fusion between Quechua, Aymara, and Spanish cultures. From improvisation to co-composition, Duo Perse-Inca draws from different genres and traditional rhythms and allows modal music from the Middle East and pentatonic scales from the Andes to coexist, as well as Oriental melodies and Western harmonies.
