Event Description

Heidi, Nostalgia and Us

by Danièle Caloz, member of the SHT

Until the 20th century, the state of nostalgic languor was taken very seriously by doctors. Thus, exiled in Frankfurt, emaciated and subject to sleepwalking, the little Heidi of Johanna Spyri’s story (1880) is immediately sent back to her beloved mountains. This homesickness with its debilitating symptoms was first recognized in 1688 by Dr. Johannes Hofer. And then, gradually, nostalgia became a sign of poverty of spirit and social maladjustment, of resistance to economic forces. Today, nostalgia is considered, at most, as a child's pain. How did we get here? What is Canada’s trajectory in this area?
