Event Description

Christian Bode, speaker and actor

Wilfrid Laurier appears on stage to explain his massive pro-growth immigration policy. The question of what to do arose when two opposing groups, the English-Canadian “Orangemen,” who feared that their country would be suffocated by the influx of hundreds of thousands of non-English speaking immigrants, and the French-Canadians “ultramontanes” from Quebec who feared the collapse of their demographic weight in Canada, rejected this policy.
Between 1896 and 1911, Canada welcomed more than 2 million immigrants. Its population increased by almost 50 per cent. Among these immigrants were Russian Doukhobors, pacifists, Ukrainians, and a few Frenchmen, whose small numbers did not satisfy Quebec. Which immigrants should be chosen? According to what criteria? How should this policy be sold to the electorate? In spite of these oppositions, Wilfrid Laurier’s immigration policy was ratified during three successive elections.
