A Contemporary Folk Encounter
Since 2017, Nikamu Mamuitun has brought together Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists in curated cohorts for collaborative songwriting. Under the guidance of artistic mentors, they create and compose an original repertoire shaped by cultural exchange, encounter, and transmission. Songs weave together French and Indigenous languages, giving voice to a dialogue between contemporary Indigenous and non-Indigenous music cultures. The first cohort's album was met with critical acclaim, earning the Félix Award for Album of the Year at the 2020 ADISQ Gala, the highest distinction in the Québec music industry.
