Initially planned for 1915, but delayed because of the First World War, the “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” saw two antagonistic conceptions of design confront each other. The first, incarnated by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, was centred on the refinement of materials, the virtuosity of craftsmanship, and the financial means of amateurs. The other, with Robert Mallet-Stevens and Le Corbusier as the standard bearers, aims to create an industrial design for the greatest number. The debate has only just begun...
