Event Description

Gilles Genty, art historian

In France, the tradition of “fine craftsmanship” dominated and the “International Style,” resulting from the alliance between design and industry, gradually imposed itself in Europe in the 1930s. In Holland, the “De Stijl” group refused all superfluous ornamentation, while in Germany, Walter Gropius’ “Bauhaus” laid the foundations of a renewed design. Soon threatened by the rise of Nazism, absent from the Paris exhibition in 1925, the Bauhaus nevertheless shines in 1929 in Barcelona with the Pavilion built by Mies van der Rohe. This “Streamline” design would flourish with artists, such as Raymond Loewy or Norman Bel Geddes, in the USA during the second half of the 20th century.
