Event Description

Just five years ago, there were eleven statues in Canada honouring Sir John A. Macdonald (1815-1891), the first man to be elected as a Canadian Prime Minister. There are now two statues left, both under the watchful eye of police officers ordered to protect them. After being elected and re-elected to govern six times and holding the office for nearly twenty years, he died with all the honour his poor little country could provide.

One hundred and thirty years later, the Canadian Prime Minister is accused of every conceivable fault, including that of being a war criminal. Where is the truth? How do we balance the criticism of today with the praise of yesteryear? One of the greatest specialists in Canadian political history will examine this question.

Lecture by: Patrice Dutil, historian and political scientist at Toronto Metropolitan University.
