To start off 2021 on a good note, we're thrilled to invite you to the sixth edition of the Night of Ideas, annual meeting dedicated to the free flow of ideas and knowledge. This year, everything will be happening on Youtube on Thursday January 28 at night.

At 10PM, join us for a conversation Closer With Opera. 

Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, artistic directors of the Opéra Atelier, will review their experience of international co-production and the challenges of remote artistic creation imposed by the current context. 


Who are they ? 

Co-Artistic Directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg co-founded Opera Atelier in 1983 and started presenting fully staged productions in 1985. They have been honoured by foreign governments (Ordre des Arts et des lettres from the Government of France), their peers (Opera Canada Ruby Award 2007) and by the City of Toronto (Muriel Sherrin Award for outstanding contribution to music in Toronto) for their contributions to the performing arts. Opera Atelier productions and artists have been nominated many times for Dora Mavor Moore Awards and won in 2005 and 2007.

Adding to Opera Atelier’s artistic excellence is its long-time partner, Grammy-nominated and Juno Award-winning Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, the world’s leading orchestra on period instruments.

 Who is Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg?

Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg has performed and choreographed internationally for more than two decades. She received her training in London, Copenhagen and Paris. Ms Zingg has choreographed and performed in more than 70 productions for Opera Atelier, which she founded in 1985 with her partner, Marshall Pynkoski.

Ms Zingg has received numerous awards including the prestigious Toronto Arts Award, the Opera Canada Ruby Award for outstanding achievement in the field of opera in Canada in addition to having been named by TIME Magazine as one of Canada’s most influential artists in the field of Classical music.

Who is Marshall Pynkoski ?

Marshall Pynkoski’s fascination with music, theatre and dance of the 17th and 18th centuries began in classes with the late Leonard Crainford and John Marshall, respectively Chairman and Major Examiner, Royal Academy of Dancing in London.

In 1985, he founded Opera Atelier with his partner Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg and he has since directed a wide range of period productions of Baroque and early Classical opera and ballet in close collaboration with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. He has acted as guest instructor at the Centre for Baroque Studies, Versailles under conductor Marc Minkowski and has collaborated with many of the finest artists in the world of early music. His productions of opera and ballet have toured throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
