Book Club -  Turcaret

Once again this year, TfT and the Alliance Française de Toronto are offering a book club focused on theatre. This virtual meeting will be an opportunity to discuss and explore mythical scenes that have marked the world of theatre.

With Hadrien Volle, cultural mediator, we will try to understand the issues in the texts, discover their meanings and share our feelings about various recognized or emerging authors. Everyone is welcome to join the club, whether new to the art world or an experienced theater enthusiast, or simply seeking information and advice before seeing the play on stage. The only prerequisites are curiosity and the pleasure of sharing ideas on theatre… in French!

Lesage is an author of the era that follows Molière and precedes Marivaux, at the beginning of the 18th century. Tucaret is a play about money, desire, and the strategies that everyone uses to get rich at all levels of the social scale. Unlike Molière's characters, if Turcaret seems to be fooled at first, cynicism appears as the play progresses. For this session, we will focus on Act I in its entirety, which highlights the less-than-laudable motivations of each character.

$5 per meeting or $30 for all meetings. Those fees do not include the books which must be purchased independently from the book club.

This activity is organized by Théâtre Français de Toronto. For more information please visit their website: http://theatrefrancais.com/en/bookclub/
