Considered today as one of the greatest precursors of modern art, Gauguin was inspired and then detached himself from Impressionism to develop an art of his own. His way of painting and his outlook on the world will make him famous but will also attract numerous and violent criticisms.
Like many avant-garde artists, Gauguin is passionate. At first a simple Sunday painter, he one day leaves a stable job and a clear future to turn completely to painting. With this decision, goodbye to fixed wages: misery awaits him - fame too, later. Gauguin's painting grabs you with the vibrancy of color and chromatic intensity. His paintings are steeped in spirituality and exoticism, they are loaded with symbols and sensuality. Gauguin seeks a naive art, a return to the sources, a look that interprets the world and sees beyond. It was not for nothing that he first paints Breton landscapes, in Pont-Aven, where the peasant way of life seduces him for its raw and simple appearance. Then, it is towards the tropical shores and in particular Tahiti that his art carries him. In these lush jungle landscapes, among statues of rough stones and naked bodies, Gauguin seeks answers to the world's questions. He paints plants in unreal colors, skinny dogs, women who never cease to fascinate him and disturbing scenes of mysticism...
From paintings to sculptures, Gauguin's work will reveal its secrets to you, or at least some of them.
