The universal language of music brings together people from two very different cultures in this documentary from filmmaker Bay Weyman. Mali is one of the poorest sections of West Africa, but it has a rich tradition of gifted native musicians; Juno-award winning kora player Mansa Sissoko was born there, and in 2007 he returned to Baleya the village of his birth in Mali for the first time since he was a boy. Accompanying Sissoko were four Canadian musicians -- Dave Clark, Lewis Melville, Dale Morningstar and Tannis Slimmon --and a portable recording rig to document the music of his homeland. As Sissoko and his friends explored Mali, they exchanged ideas with a number of local musicians, artists and griots while also discussing the social, economic and political challenges that have prevented much of West Africa from progressing into the 21st Century. Road To Baleya was an official selection at the 2008 Montréal World Film Festival.
