TCF

The TCF (Test de connaissance du français) is a French language test offered by the French Ministry of National Education, Higher Education, and Research.

The TCF exam assesses a person’s level of French for general purposes. It is intended for people who are non-native speakers wishing to assess and certify their skills in French in a simple, reliable and timely fashion, and for academic, professional, or personal reasons.

All candidates receive a certificate of completion that places them on the six-level scale (from A1 to C2) established by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). It is therefore impossible to fail the TCF exam.

The certificate is valid for two years.

This test is intended for those who want to evaluate their skills in French for a number of reasons:

  • Professionally: the TCF certificate is a benchmark of one's language abilities and can be useful in their CV, a job application, or a promotion.
  • Personally: the TCF provides a linguistic evaluation for a candidate wishing to asess their oral and written skills in French.
  • Final year undergraduates, postgraduate students, and students at the French Grandes Écoles: the TCF is systematically required by higher education institutes for any student wishing to apply for a final year undergraduate or postgraduate study.

It is composed of:

  • Three compulsory tests (1h 25mins in total)
    • Reading comprehension
    • Listening comprehension
    • Language structures
  • One optional test: Written expression (1 hour in total)

For more information on the TCF test, please visit the FEI website (France Education International) or download the candidate's handbook.
