The TEF (Test d’Evaluation du Français) is administered by the Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris(CCIP). The TEF is recognized by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as conclusive proof of your language skills.

It assesses candidates from an elementary to an advanced level. No specific qualification or training is required to take the TEF.

The TEF includes:

  • Three compulsory tests: a total of 2 hrs 10
    • Reading comprehension 1 hour
    • Listening comprehension 40 minutes
    • Structures & vocabulary 30 minutes
  • Two optional tests: 1 hrs 35
    • Written expression 1 hour
    • Oral expression 20 minutes

The test results are validated by an official document attesting to the points earned for each section and the linguistic and communication objectives attained. Therefore it is impossible to fail the TEF.

This certificate is valid for two year from the date one takes the exam.

The sections are based on various exercises and activities. For further information, please check the TEF website and the TEF Candidat Handbook.

Several options are offered during registration.

The compulsory and optional modules can be taken during the same session.

Applicants can choose to take only one optional module or both, on the same day. They can also choose to take the optional modules only to complete the compulsory modules, up to one year after obtaining the former.

Beyond this limit, candidates must retake the compulsory modules.

Applicants can obtain information on the different instructions for the modules from the applicant's manual which will be sent to them two weeks prior to each session, at the same time as their invitation.

No prior diploma is required to pass the TEF. The TEF assesses candidates from elementary to advanced level.

Tests sessions will be reopened along with the phase 2 of Ontario's deconfinement. We recommend candidates to send their registration form duly completed (see How to Register below). They will be on waiting list and contacted for their registration to a test at our North York campus.
