TEF Canada

The TEF Canada (Test d’Évaluation de Français pour le Canada) is a general French exam for Francophones and non-native speakers designed to assess their level of proficiency and skills in French. 

The TEF Canada is recognized as official proof of language proficiency by Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (IRCC) as well as the Quebec Ministry of Immigration and Cultural Communities (MICC) for permanent residency applications, Quebec Selection Certificate applications, and Canadian citizenship applications. 

No diploma is required to take the TEF Canada exams.

The TEF Canada is suited for candidates wishing to assess their level of proficiency in French for their immigration application to Canada or Quebec, or for Canadian citizenship applications.

Exam Details

To pass the exam, you must have basic computer skills (know how to use of mouse).

The TEF Canada consists of 4 modules: 

  1. Written comprehension: 60 minutes – 40 questions – 699 points
  2. Oral comprehension: approximately 40 minutes  – 40 questions – 699 points
  3. Written expression: 60 minutes – 2 topics – 699 points
  4. Oral expression: 15 minutes – 2 topics – 699 points

On the Day of the Exam

Candidates who arrive late will not be allowed in the examination room once the exam has started.

  • Candidates must present themselves with their convocation and a piece of photo identification with their date of birth (valid passport/ valid driver's license/ national ID card). 
  • As per official exam requirements, candidates will have their photo taken before the start of the exam.
  • During the entire multiple choice part of the test (approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes), exits will not be permitted. During the entire written expression exam (1 hour), exits will not be permitted, unless in case of an emergency or health issue previously informed by the candidate and justified with a medical certificate.
  • During the entirety of the exams, candidates will not be permitted to communicate with each other.
  • In the event of fraud or misconduct by a candidate (disturbing the examination procedure, communication or attempt to communicate with other candidates or the outside, etc.), candidates are subject to immediate removal from the examination room as well as a ban from taking the test for a period that will be determined by the CCI Paris Île-de-France.


  • The TEF Canada exam results in a certificate of completion. Each certificate is detailed and personalized. For each test, you will be given: the number of points you received, the French level achieved, and a comment on your knowledge of general French.
  • The certificates of completion are delivered to you 2 to 4 weeks after the exam, either by email.
  • It is possible to take the test more than once, as long as there is a 30-day waiting period between registrations.

 Price, transfer and cancellation policy

  • The cost of the TEF-Canada exam is CAD$ 390.
  • Transfers or cancellations are possible up to 15 days before the exam date. After this date, no refund can be offered.
  • Candidates make their refunds by logging on to the account they opened when they registered. A fee of CAD 75 will be deducted from the refund.
  • Once the credit has been issued on your account, the candidate can then re-register for another session from the online calendar of future sessions.
  • For cancellations please contact the exam manager of your exam center.
