The following conditions apply to all students regardless of the level and category of the course.

Placement Tests

In order to ensure that the students are placed in the correct level of French, a placement test will be required for all new students who have some knowledge of French, as well as those returning to AFT who have not registered in a course within 6 months or more. The cost of the test ($20) will be deducted from the tuition fee if the person is registered in a course.

Wait List

If a class is full, a student can request to be placed on the wait list. They will be contacted as soon as there is a seat available or if the number of registrations requires an additional class to be created.

Payment

Students must pay their tuition and book fees in full (where applicable) prior to the start of the session. GST is not applied to the tuition fee. The cost of course material and books is separate from the tuition fee.

For new students of Alliance Française Toronto, there is a $20 non-refundable registration fee.

Method of Payment

Payments can be made by personal cheque, Interac, AMEX, Visa, or MasterCard.

A $25 surcharge will be levied on all cheques with insufficient funds.

When a student's course fees are paid by their employer, Alliance Française Toronto requires a purchase order. If the employer has not paid for the student's tuition fees and course material 3 weeks after receiving an invoice, the student assumes responsibility for these costs within one week of notice from AFT.

Upgrade Options

In case there are only 3 students registered in a course, AFT will offer students one of the following options:

  1. Upgrading to a semi-private course of 20 hours for adults and 26/27 hours for children, following the same schedule and content.
  2. Obtaining a full refund (no administration fee).

Remedial and Refresher Classes

With a recommendation of a teacher, students can benefit from private lessons at a premium rate within certain circumstances:

  • Refresher course: this option is offered to students before they register for a group course that requires them to review some of the course material.
  • Remedial course: this option is offered to students who have completed a group course and are in need of reviewing certain language skills before registering for the next level of French.

In both cases, these classes can not exceed a 4-hour session.

Session Transfers

A student may request to be transferred to another session, conditional upon availability of space, as follows:

  • 8 business days or more prior to the start date of the session: transfer without administration fees.
  • 7 business days or less prior to the start date of the session: transfer with an administration fee of $25.
  • The first day of the session: no transfers will be allowed, but a credit note will be issued.

Refund Policy

Tuition fees for group, private, or corporate courses are non-refundable, unless:

  • Alliance Française Toronto is not able to open a course for a student or accomodate the student in a similar course,
  • A student provides AFT with a written notice of their withdrawal from the course at least 3 business days prior to the start of the applicable session. Saturday and Sunday are not considered business days. A $50 administration fee is applied to all refunds and is automatically deducted from the refund amount.

Credit Notes

Credit notes may be granted to a student who wishes to withdraw from a course once they provide AFT with a written notice.

  • Credit notes will not be issued if 1/3 or more of the total duration of the course has been completed.
  • Absence from 1 or more hours of the course does not constitute a valid notice of withdrawal in order to receive a credit note.
  • Credit notes are valid for a period not exceeding six months from the last attended class.
  • Credit notes will be processed based on the number of remaining hours in the course, once AFT receives written notice of the student’s intent to withdraw.
  • An administration fee of $50 will automatically be deducted from the value of the credit note.
  • Students are not entitled to a credit for a course where a previous credit was used as full or partial payment of tuition fees.
  • All classes up to and including the date of the credit note request will be deducted from the remaining instructional hours. Credit notes will not be granted for missed classes.

Private Courses

Students will not be permitted to substitute a missed class with a class offered in a similar course during the week. Students can request to attend a private course if they miss their registered class or if their teacher recommends a private course prior to the start of a class.

The class must to be reserved and paid in advance and is subject to the availability of teachers and classrooms. Once the class has been scheduled and confirmed, refunds and changes are not available.

A 10-hour contract of private lessons must be taken within 3 months. During this time, only 3 cancellations are permitted and require 1 business day (Monday-Friday) notice from the student as well as from the instructor.

Income Tax Receipt

According to Revenue Canada, tuition fees are tax-deductible for students who are at least 16 years old or older and for students of all ages participating in a summer camp. Alliance Française Toronto will send tax receipts to students via email by the end of February.
